On August 15th, 2023, Assoc. Prof. Kanograt Pornpanich, Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology; Prof. Ngamkae Ruangvaravate, Lecturer of the Department of Ophthalmology; and Assoc. Prof. Prapat Wanitpongpan, Deputy Dean for Corporate Communication and International Relations, welcomed Prof. Dr. Lorna Elizabeth Edmunds, Head of Glaucoma Division, Casey Eye Institute, Oregon Health & Science University, USA, to serve as the visiting scholar at the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, sharing her expertise in Glaucoma and Pediatric Glaucoma starting from August 15th-19th, 2023.

Empowering Medical Education: Highlights from the 12th ASEAN Medical Deans’ Summit and 8th ASEAN Medical School Network Student Chapter

Prof. Apichat Asavamongkolkul, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University along with Assoc. Prof. Prapat Wanitpongpan, Deputy Dean for Corporate Communication and International Relations, Assoc. Prof. Sith Sathornsumetee, Deputy Dean for Research and Innovation, Assoc. Prof. Tripop Lertbunnaphong, Deputy Dean for Undergraduate Education, and Asst. Prof. Kanokwaroon Watananirun, Assistant Dean for Corporate Communication and International Relations attended the “12th ASEAN Medical Deans’ Summit” and “the 8th ASEAN Medical School Network: Student Chapter” between July 27th -29th,2023, hosted by Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

On July 28th, 2023 – The ASEAN Medical Deans’ Summit commenced with an opening remark by Prof. Chong Yap Seng, President of ASEAN Medical School Network, and a speech from Prof. Dato’ Ir. Dr. Mohd Hamdi Abd Shukor, Vice Chancellor of Universiti Malaya.

Themed “Towards the Development of Future-Ready ASEAN Health Professionals,” the four-day summit featured four insightful sessions:

 

Session 1: Preparing Graduates for Practice

Moderated by Prof. Charlotte Chiong, Dean of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine, the session covered essential topics:

  • Yang Faridah from Universiti Malaya, Malaysia, discussed “Competency-based Medical Education and Standards.”
  • Prof. Lau Tang Ching, Vice Dean of Education at NUSMed, Singapore, emphasized the importance of “Healthcare Common Curriculum for Interprofessional Education.”
  • Prof. Tripop Lertbunnaphong, Deputy Dean of Undergraduate Education at Mahidol, highlighted “Non-Compensatory Based Assessment and Pi Shape Medical Curriculum.”

Session 2: Coaching in Learner-Centered Medical Education

Assoc. Prof. Marion Aw, Vice Dean at the Office of Student Affairs, NUSMed, expertly moderated this session featuring esteemed speakers:

  • Shahrul Bahyah, Deputy Dean of Postgraduate Studies at Universiti Malaya, discussed “Refining role of trainers in the postgraduate clinical program”
  • Prof. Dionne Sacdalan from the Philippine General Hospital offered valuable perspectives on “Supporting the postgraduate trainees during the COVID19 pandemic: The Philippine General Hospital experience”
  • Dwiana Ocviyanti, Vice Dean at Universitas Indonesia
  • Khin Aung Htun, Rector of Defense Services Medical Academy, Yangon, added his expertise to the discussion.

Session 3: Best Practices in Assessments

Asst. Prof. Kanokwaroon Watananirun, Assistant Dean for Corporate Communication and International Relations moderated this crucial session.

 

Session 4: Harmonization of Curricula Across ASEAN: Education Without Borders

Assoc. Prof. Prapat Wanitpongpan, Deputy Dean for Corporate Communication and International Relations, skillfully led this session, which included a “Strategic Approaches to Achievement” workshop covering the following topics:

 

  • Hong Wei Han, from the Medical Education & Research Development Unit at UM, elaborated on the ASEAN graduate profile.
  • Ari Fahrial Syam, Dean of Universitas Indonesia, delved into ASEAN Collaborative Learning.
  • Discussions on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) were explored.
  • Dujeepa Samarasekera, Senior Director at the Centre for Medical Education, NUSMed, discussed ASEAN Faculty Development (NUS).

 

Simultaneously, the ASEAN Medical School Network (AMSN) Student Chapter, with the theme “Comprehensive Assessment for Future-ready Medical Practitioners,” engaged students from ASEAN countries in exploring three sub-themes:

  • Authentic Assessments (WPBA): Focusing on evaluating clinical competencies through workplace-based assessments.
  • Assessment of Professionalism: Ethical practices and behavior as future doctors and students were evaluated.
  • Simulation-Based Assessments: Students honed technical and non-technical skills through lifelike scenarios and OSCE.

On July 28th, 2023 student representatives from student dialogue also presented in the AMSN Student Dialogue with the moderator, Prof. Dr. Muhamad Yazid Jalaluddin.

The summit and student chapter event provided an invaluable platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange among medical professionals and students, fostering a promising future for ASEAN’s healthcare sector.

Siriraj International Residency & Fellowship Orientation 2023

On July 21st, 2023, Assoc. Prof. Thawornchai Limjindaporn, M.D., Ph.D., Deputy Dean for Postgraduate Education, and Prof. Woraphong Manuskiatti, M.D., Assistant Dean for Postgraduate Education, delivered a welcoming address to the international Residents & Fellows on the orientation ceremony “Siriraj International Residency & Fellowship Training Program Orientation 2023” at Siriraj Medical Library, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. This orientation aims to welcome and provide all necessary information on life at Siriraj, history, culture, advice & experience sharing, and Siriraj’s one-stop services, including the ice-breaking activities for all newcomers of Siriraj’s international residents and fellows!

Siriraj International Residents & Fellows Exchange Program 2023 (Round 4)

On July 17th, 2023, the Siriraj International Residency & Fellow Exchange Program Committee included Assoc. Prof. Prapat Wanitpongpan, MD, Deputy Dean for Corporate Communication and International Relations; Asst. Prof. Kanokwaroon Watananirun, MD, Assistant Dean for Corporate Communication and International Relations; Assoc. Prof. Thawornchai Limjindaporn, MD, Ph.D., Deputy Dean of Postgraduate Education; and Asst. Prof. Sani Baimai, MD, Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Education conducted an onsite interview session for the “Siriraj International Residency & Fellow Exchange Program 2023” fellows/residents: Dr. Thanut Boonhaijaroen and Dr. Nattamol Kosaiyaganonth from the Department of Ophthalmology (both third-year residents) and Dr. Varis Manomaivong from the Department of Pediatrics (a second-year fellow).

Also, the committee took the opportunity to review the onsite reflection presentations of participants from Rounds 2-3:

  1. 2nd-Year Fellow, Dr. Nichkamol Lertamornkitti from the Department of Pediatrics training at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) from April 1st – 30th, 2023.
  2. 2nd-Year Resident, Dr. Vanthana Charoensawatsiri from the Department of Otorhinolaryngology training at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine from April 10th – May 5th, 2023.

Furthermore, three fellows/residents submitted their online presentations as reflections to be reviewed:

  1. 2nd-Year Fellow, Dr. Nophathai Sojisirikul from the Department of Pediatrics training at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), USA, from April 1st – 30th, 2023.
  2. 3rd-Year Resident, Dr. Natrinee Naksupphamit from the Department of Pediatrics, training at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), USA, from April 1st – 30th, 2023.
  3. 1st-Year Fellow, Dr. Theeradej Tepkasetkul from the Department of Medicine training at the National Epilepsy Center, NHO Shizuoka Institute of Epilepsy and Neurological Disorders, Japan, from May 29th – June 23rd, 2023.

The review of these presentations allowed the committee and participants to understand the transformative impact of the exchange program on the residents and fellows involved. It also emphasized the importance of international cooperation and knowledge sharing in advancing the field of medicine on a global scale.

Siriraj Singing Contest Reaches Thrilling Finale!

On June 26th, 2023, Prof. Apichat Asavamongkolkul, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, along with Assoc. Prof. Prapat Wanitpongpan, Deputy Dean for Corporate Communication and International Relations; Asst. Prof. Sansnee Senawong, Chief of the Department of Immunology; Maleena Bungnag Lu, CM.D.; Lect. Puchong Chimpiboon from Siriraj Palliative Care Center, and Lect. Rawissada Sukkittiworakul from the College of Music, Mahidol University, presided over#SIRIRAJsingingcontest2023! at Sirindhorn room, Chalermprakiat building.

Throughout the competition, our senses were enraptured by the performances of the top 12 talented individuals. They left us spellbound with their abilities, making it arduous for the judges to determine the ultimate winner.

We congratulate Asst. Prof. Titima Wongviriyawong, the winner of the singing contest, from the Division of Geriatric Medicine, Department of Medicine for her inspiring performance of ‘Say Something’ by A Great Big World. As the first runner-up, Ms. Wilawan Chaiyaporn from Policy and Planning Division enraptured us with her emotional performance of ‘Hurt’ by Christina Aguilera. And let’s not forget the remarkable Mr. Sukrit Dowjunard, the second runner-up, from Siriraj Hospital’s Medical Record Division whose rendition of ‘I’m Not the Only One’ by Sam Smith.

Siriraj Faculty Abroad at ISOM (OM2023) in the USA

On June 21st, 2023 Prof. Kitirat Ungkanont, a Vice-Chair of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, was invited as a guest speaker to deliver a special lecture on the topic “Otitis media in children with cleft palate: comprehensive studies of the clinical course and the long-term outcome of the management.” at the “22nd International Symposium on Recent Advances in Otitis Media (OM2023)” in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.

The ISOM is the biannual International Otitis Media (OM) Symposium. The OM Symposium accomplishes the ever-difficult task of grouping leaders in OM research from all medical fields and corners of the world into one single highly interactive, exceedingly collegial scientific forum. The benefits afforded by having the ability to learn and engage in scientific exchange with OM leaders, individuals, and their research groups are immeasurable.
