Division of diagnostic radiology is provide the services in expertise of diagnostic and intervention radiology for the public , both outpatient and inpatient.

History of the Department of Radiology

On January 28, 1928, the first x-ray imaging using plain film was done for the patients of Siriraj Hospital Medical School at the new ˜”Department of X-Ray Imaging”. Dr. Phin Muangman was the first Head of the Department, which was located on the second floor of the Operation Building. Later, it was moved to a newly built one-storey building finished in August 1935 and named ˜”Department of Radiology™”.

A new 2-storey concrete building with a roofdeck was opened on March 24, 1939, and named the “Radiology Building”™. An important landmark was the Statue of Prince Mahidol at the front of the building. In 1952, an Outpatient x-ray service Unit was opened at the old OPD building so as to be convenient to both OPD and IPD patients.

In 1953, the Head of the Radiology Department as well as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine w as Luang Phinphakphitthayaphet whose the title and name was conferred by King Bhumipol. Luang Phinphakphitthayaphet was widely, and highly, regarded as the ˜”Father of Radiology™” in Thailand. He encouraged and supported Dr. Romsai Suwanik to study Radiology at the College of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, USA under a Fulbright Scholarship. Dr. Romsai Suwanik went on to further study Nuclear Medicine at the University of California, Berkeley before returning to Thailand. Two years later his efforts led to the establishment at Siriraj Hospital of the first Nuclear Medicine Division in Thailand for diagnosis and treatment and for research into aspects of Nuclear Medicine. The first use of radioisotopes was by Dr. Romsai Suwanik in 1955 and the Division of Nuclear Medicine developed rapidly under his creative and pioneering work.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The workload of the Department of Radiology grew considerably and as a result of the significant increase in the number of patients and the age of the building, the Committee of Siriraj Hospital agreed to have the old Radiology Building demolished and re-built as a 10-storey building. This was also to celebrate the 72^nd year anniversary of Siriraj Hospital. During the construction of the new building, the Department had to temporarily move to the first floor of the Pharmacology Building. At the same time, the USA Government donated a Co-60 instrument as a gift to the Division of Radiotherapy of the hospital. Right after the first floor of the new building was finished, the instrument was moved in to be installed and then the long list of those with malignancy waiting for treatment could be properly serviced.

On the date 1 Mar 1969, King Rama IX was given the new mane of university to be Mahidol University, the faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital is named formally.  In 1976 Extablished the course of residency training in radiology. In 1982 Established the first Computed tomographic machine at the 72nd Anniv. Bldg, In 1992 Gained new space at the ground floor of OPD bldg and established the CT and first MRI machine.   In 2003 established the Computed radiographic system in Siriraj Hospital at the 1 fl of Siamintra bldg. and PACs as the first site reference in Thailand. In 2007 Renovated the ground floor of OPD bldg and established the Siriraj Imaging Center for advanced scanning and In 2008 Renovated the space of 2 fl. of 72nd Ann. bldg for diagnostic radiology. In 2016 the SIC was extended to the Chalermprakiat bldg. to service more effectiveness.

In 2017 removated the first floor of 72 ann. bldg for the division of radiotherapy and new machine for cancer patient.  On the other hand, the unit of vacular and intervention radiology, division of diagnostic radiology was transformed to the Center of  Intervention, under the office of Siriraj Hospital.

furthermore, in 2019 the new area of radiology at the 84 ann. Navamintraborpit bldg. will be open for the service effectiveness.
