On June 4th, 2019, Prof. Dr. Prasit Watanapa, Dean of Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital presided over the press conference on the 1st Thailand Accomplishment in three stem-cell treatments in Cornea. The press conference was witnessed by Assoc. Prof. Ngamkae Ruangvaravate, Chairwoman of Department of Ophthalmology, Assoc. Prof. Pinnita Tanthuvanit, Head of Cornea and Refractive Surgery Division, Assoc. Prof. Pattama Ekpo from Research Department and Stem cell transplant team. The press conference was held at Chulabhorn conference room, 2nd floor, Syamindra Building, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital.
Dean Watanapa explained that Siriraj has successfully accomplished in ophthalmology treatment by using stem-cell transplantation after 12 years of development. From research to treatment, the development displays the well-being of ophthalmology patients, solving the public health issue, improve the quality of lives, and leverage the research to the international arena. The Dean continued that the three-stem cell development method has started since 2007; CLET (Cultivated limbal epithelial transplantation); COMET (Cultivated oral mucosal epithelial transplantation) in 2008; and SLET (Simple Limbal Epithelial Transplantation) in 2014. In nowadays, and for the first time in Thailand, Siriraj is available to provide three options for patients in treating ocular surface burns by using the above methods, saving time and cost, depending on patients’ condition.
On September 21, 2018, Assist. Prof. Chakrapong Namatra, Head of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, welcomed Dr. Lorri Wilson and Dusty Gronemyer, C.O. from Casey Eye institute, OHSU. On this occasion, Dr. Lorri Wilson and Dusty Gronemyer also held the lecture on topics “Pearls and Pitfalls of Pediatric Eye Exam” and “Esotropia”.
On April 26, 2018, Professor Dr. Prasit Watanapa, Dean of Faculty of Medicine led Siriraj faculties, Assist. Prof. Chakrapong Namatra, department head, personnel and staffs celebrate the 130th Founding Anniversary of Siriraj Hospital at Prince Mahidol Statue. The event held under the concept traditional Thai costume to preserve Thai culture and commemorate all 130 projects those have been operated and initiated by Siriraj Hospital for the benefit of mankind.
Department of Ophthalmology, Siriraj Hospital held “Songkran 2018” to celebrate the Songkran Festival on April 9, 2018 at the 14th floor of Siamindra Building. There were many Thai traditional activities such as the bathing rites of the Buddha image (Song Nam Phra), pouring of sacred water on the hands of Assist. Prof. Chakrapong Namatra, department head, former department head and other executives (Rod Nam Dam Hua) and receiving the Thai New Year’s Eve blessing from them.
– Undergraduate program
We have responsibility for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th year’s curricula for medical students of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital and also provide an elective exchange program both locally and intemationally. In the\recent academic year, we hosted 2 foreign medical students in the elective program from the Medical University of Vienna, Austria.
Furthermore, we are preceding the reorganization of the Ophthalmology subject in the medical curriculum for the 5th year medical student and also the elective course for the 6th year medical student. It would be effective in the academic year 2018.
– Postgraduate program
Residency training program:
The residency training program is an accredited 3-year curriculum with continuous improvement towards highly international standard. Since 2013, our department had offered the opportunity to accept foreign physicians enrolling in our residency program. Some of them were from the member of ASEAN countries and some from outside. And the fellowship training program (at least 2 subspecialties) had been offered to foreigner many years before
In order to concretely leverage the standard of our residency training program, we had adopted the evaluation criteria from the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) as the guideline in monitoring the course satisfaction since 2016. The department sent resident. The International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) examination and the passing rate of Part: Basic Science = 87.50% in the first time.
The Department is the first one training institute in Thailand to implement the Eye Simulator for resident training. Using computer generated exercises and simulated scenarios. Allows learners to become familiar with hand gestures and eye surgery equipment before practicing eye surgery with patients.
We set up cataract Surgery training with by Pig Eye to first and second year resident in every year. It covers all skills, from the selection eye surgery equipment and the use of equipment, the use of Bio microscope in surgery, care and cleaning of sterilization. Preoperative preparation Practice, Microsurgery surgical stitching skill using pig eye for confident before going to practice in patients. To prevent complications that occur before, immediate and after surgery.
“Ophthalmology Residency Open House” is an activity held last year for young doctors to gain more information before making the decision in joining the proper residency training program at Siriraj Hospital.
The department accepts Tamir Amarjargal, MD from Health Sciences University of Mongolia (HSUM), Mongolia to enroll in the program in this academic year.
Fellowship training
We have 7 fellowship training programs. In this year there are 10 fellows in all 7 subspecialties and 1 foreign doctor, Dovchinjamts Dagvadorj, MD from Health Sciences University of Mongolia (HSUM), Mongolia, as a clinical fellow in Fellowship Program in Vitreoretinal Disease for 1 year. Other courses we teach are the Center of Applied Thai Traditional Medicine, Physiotherapy and Optometry degree (Ramkhamhaeng University).
