On December 14th, 2022, Prof. Apichat Asavamongkolkul, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, welcomed the executive members of the Centre for Healthcare Innovation (CHI), Singapore, led by Clin. Assoc. Prof. Wong Hon Tym, the Fellowship Program Director of the CHI, on the site visit at the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. The guests from CHI started their visit by attending the special lecture by the Deputy Dean of Service Innovation and Corporate Value: Assoc. Prof. Cherdchai Noprnaneejumruslers, on the topic “Siriraj 5G Smart Hospital Project – lessons learned,” and also attended the “Exhibition of 5G Smart Hospital Projects.” The CHI guests closed their visit by observing Siriraj’s Excellence Centers, such as “Siriraj Diabetes Center of Excellence,”“Robotic Pharmacy,”“Siriraj Center of Applied Thai Traditional Medicine,” and “Siriraj Mobile Stroke Ambulance.”

On December 9th, 2022, the ASEAN Medical Deans’ Summit start with an opening remark by the President of ASEAN Medical Schools Network, Prof. Chong Yap Seng, Dean of the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Singapore, and the discussions on 4 themes: “Competency-Based Medical Education in ASEAN”, “Inter-Professional Education in ASEAN”, “Integrated Undergraduate Medical Curriculum in ASEAN”, and “Harmonization of Undergraduate Medical Curriculum in ASEAN”, including “the ASEAN Medical Schools Network Student Dialogue”.
The next session is the 7th ASEAN Medical Schools Network Board Meeting chaired by the President of ASEAN Medical School Network, Prof. Chong Yap Seng, Dean of NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, and the discussions continued on 5 agendas as follows:

On December 9th, 2022, Prof. Tawesak Tanwandee, Chief of the Gastroenterology Division, Prof. Somchai Leelakusolvong, Director of GI Endoscopy Center, and Assoc. Prof. Nonthalee Pausawadi, President of the Thai Association for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, welcomed five senior gastroenterologists & health care professionals from the USA led by Dr. John Popp, the former President of the American College of Gastroenterology, on the visit and discussion at Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital. Dr.Pop and his team also visited the Siriraj Medical Library, the Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine, the Siriraj Applied Thai Traditional Medicine, and the Gastrointestinal & Liver Center at Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital.
During December 6th – 7th, 2022, Clin. Prof. Anchalee Churojana, a Chairwoman of the Department of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, and Assoc. Prof. Thaweesak Aurboonyawat from the Division of Neurological Surgery, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, will attend as an invited faculty at the international seminar for the interventional NeuroRadiology, Neurology, and NeuroSurgery community, “the LINNC Seminar 2022 – Asia Edition” in Singapore. This two-day program will offer participants discussions around interesting pre-recorded clinical cases with famous guests, the LINNC Asia has the ambition to offer educational content to everyone in order to improve their clinical knowledge with a single objective: to propose the best treatment for our patients.

The Winner: ‘The Unnamed Crew’ presented the journey via artifacts from various perspectives of Siriraj. (The Unnamed Crew is a group of Siriraj’s 2nd-year medical students)
The 1st runner-up: ‘Siriraj Ocular Prosthetic Center’ from the Department of Ophthalmology, presented the highlight of Siriraj Ophthalmology’s services.
The 2nd runners-up (tie), ‘The Health Promotion Division’ presented the health space and services in Siriraj Hospital, and ‘Dr. Thanunchanok Chaiperm’ of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology presented the highlight of Siriraj from the diverse people’s views.

On December 1st, 2022, Prof. Apichat Asavamongkolkul, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, together with Ms. Pin Sridurongkatum, Secretary of the Department, Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), and Assoc. Prof. Phawin Keskool, Chairman of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, presided over the opening ceremony of a 2-day workshop, “The Rhinology Dissection Course,” between December 1st – 2nd, 2022. This year, TICA and Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs have supported 2 Bhutanese medical doctors to attend the Rhinology Dissection Course at the Siriraj Training and Education Center for Clinical Skills (SiTEC).
This year, the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University has organized short training programs between September – December 2022 under the project, “The Development of Ear Nose Throat Centre Project in Bhutan” supported by TICA and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for 18 Bhutanese medical personnel (consisting of ENT doctors, audiometricians, hearing aid technicians, and biomedical engineers.) This project will contain 4 customized training programs as follows:
1. Audiometrician Workshop for Technicians.
2. Hearing Aids Trouble Shooting and Fitting Workshop.
3. Workshop for Maintenance Staff.
4. Fess/Rhinology Workshop.
Lastly, on December 2nd, 2022, Assoc. Prof. Phawin Keskool has summarized the final report of “The Development of Ear Nose Throat Centre Project in Bhutan” to Ms. Pin Sridurongkatum, Secretary of the Department, TICA, and Mr. Aeyaya Chorot, Attaché from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to exchanged their views and ways towards the next project.

While on his duty at Siriraj, Prof. Postema also donated his book “Pedorthic Footwear – Assessment and Treatment” (to share his knowledge of different aspects concerning pedorthic footwear with all the different professionals that are involved in foot care) to the Siriraj Medical Library.

Prof. Supat Vanichakarn, Secretary General of Prince Mahidol Award Foundation under the Royal Patronage, Mr. Natapanu Nopakun, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Information and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Vicharn Panich, Chairman of Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program Steering Committee, and Emer. Thirteen applicants from seven institutes were nominated for Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program in 2022. Only five successful applicants qualified for the criteria of Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program. The Selection Committee selected the scholarship recipients and presented to the Board of Trustees which HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is a President. The final decision was made on October 31st, 2022.
Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program was founded on November 20th, 2008, in accordance with the 2nd/2008 consensus of the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation Committee. Following in the footsteps of HRH Prince Mahidol of Songkla, the initiative aims to motivate and encourage Thai youths studying in the health fields to pursue a dedicated life for the benefit of mankind. The steering committee, working committee, and selection committee are in charge of selecting applicants who satisfy the program’s criteria and presenting their names to the Board of Trustees, of which HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is a member, for a final decision.

Mr. Pranaidej Hengswat
Mr. Pranaidej Hengswat is a sixth-year medical student at Mahidol University’s Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital. He is particularly interested in the use of engineered comprehensive oncolytic herpes simplex virus-1 (ecoHSV-1) to modulate tumor-immune microenvironment in Cholangiocarcinoma.
The research’s core idea is to develop a virus that does not harm normal human cells but can infect and destroy cancer cells. Furthermore, the virus should be designed to be capable of causing anti-tumor inflammation within the tumor microenvironment. Mr. Pranaidej is engaged in such technology at the laboratory research level, considering it is vital for the future development of innovative alternative therapies for cancer patients in Thailand and throughout the world.
