On September 22nd, 2023, Prof. Apichat Asawamankul, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, presided over the Ceremony of Taking the Oath to promote the charitable activities of the students from the Bangkok Noi campus. This ceremony occurred in front of Prince Mahidol Statue, who encouraged the students before they embarked on a primary donation drive throughout Bangkok and nearby provinces. The funds raised will be used to help underprivileged patients at Siriraj Hospital.
The Ceremony of Taking the Oath, an annual event held on “Mahidol Day,” follows in the footsteps of His Majesty King Adulyadej Vikrom, “Father of Modern Medicine in Thailand,” and is dedicated to serving society. In addition to commemorating His Majesty’s dedication to the advancement of modern Thai medicine, this event also involves fundraising efforts to help underprivileged patients at Siriraj Hospital. This tradition has been ongoing since 1960 and continues to instill a sense of social responsibility in the students, who actively contribute to the well-being of society.
In this year’s event, students will visit various locations in Bangkok, such as the Wang Lang area, Tha Phra Chan, Chulalongkorn Hospital, and nearby provinces like Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan. Artists and performers will accompany the donation drive at the Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Building.

On September 16th, 2023, Assoc. Prof. Weerasak Muangpaisan, from the Department of Preventive & Social Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital at Mahidol University, served as an invited speaker on the topic “Effects of water-soluble mangosteen extract on cognitive function and neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease (WECAN-AD): a randomized controlled trial” at the 11th International Phytonutrient Symposium 2023 (IPS 2023) and the 14th Asian Congress of Nutrition (ACN 2023) in China. Also, he shared his experience and knowledge in the panel discussion “Importance of Phytonutrients in super-aged society: discussion on the role of phytonutrients in science perspectives.”
The Federation of Asian Nutrition Societies (FANS), established in 1973, organizes the ACN every four years. On September 6th – 9th 2023, Asst. Prof. Pitipol Choopong, MD., from the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended the “17th International Ocular Inflammation Society (IOIS) Congress” in Berlin, Germany, as a moderator/speaker for the session “Artificial intelligence in Uveitis, Case Presentations – Uveitis Society of Thailand (UST)” and delivered a special lecture/presentation on the topic “Artificial Intelligence in Ophthalmology in Thailand.” This meeting is a unique gathering of 34 international societies, 14 Sections, free papers, and Special Interest Symposia, robust scientific sessions that cover a broad spectrum of intraocular and extraocular inflammatory and infectious disorders. Particular focus also on recent advances in ocular imaging, current knowledge of the underlying inflammatory pathogenesis of disorders, i.e., age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, comprehension of inflammation-related eye diseases, and recent scientific progress on novel therapeutic approaches, including surgical interventions in uveitis complications, i.e., medical and surgical management of inflammatory ocular surface diseases, keratopathies, glaucoma, and retinopathies.
The 17th IOIS Congress provided a unique opportunity for educational and scientific exchanges for academic and clinical researchers, healthcare professionals, and health industry representatives. During September 5th-9th, 2023, Prof. Suwimon Tangwiwat from the Department of Anesthesiology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, showcased her exceptional abilities as an instructor during the “6th World Congress on Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine” in France. During the cadaver workshop, Prof. Suwimon played a crucial role as an instructor, sharing her extensive knowledge of abdominal wall block techniques. In addition, she also volunteered as an instructor in the QL block workshop, showcasing her expertise in the field.
Furthermore, Prof. Suwimon’s contributions extended to the “Simulation Workshop: epidural anesthesia” and “Simulation Workshop: continuous perineural catheter,” where she demonstrated her proficiency and dedication to advancing the anesthesiology field.
This event was a Joint Meeting that was organized by four different societies: the American Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA Pain Medicine), the Latin American Society of Regional Anaesthesia (LASRA), the Asian & Oceanic Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine (AOSRA – PM), and the African Society of Regional Anaesthesia (AFSRA). It was held simultaneously with the 40th ESRA Annual Congress.
