Between June 14th – 23rd, 2023, Assoc. Prof. Pornpan Koomanachai of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, visited the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Medical Center as a guest lecturer & speaker for the UCLA’s medical students, residents, and fellows on the following topics (respectively):
June 20th: Online Conference co-teaching on “Heart-Lung Transplant Infectious Disease.”
June 21st: Co-teaching on the topic “Heart-Lung Transplant Infectious Disease” & attended the UCLA Medical Center’s Fellows Clinic for a “talk session” with UCLA’s medical students, residents, and fellows.
June 22nd: Co-teaching on “Kidney-Bone Marrow Transplant Infectious Disease.”
June 23rd: Co-teaching on “Neurology and Neurosurgery Infectious Disease.”
Certification Ceremony at Siriraj Otorhinolaryngology
Assoc. Prof. Phawin Keskool, Chairman of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, along with the Faculty Members of the Division of Laryngology, Head & Neck Surgery Division, delivered a certificate of completion to Dr. Giacomo Gravante from the University of Insubria, Italy, who successfully completed a short training program “Short Training Program in Head & Neck Surgery” at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology between March 1st – June 30th, 2023.

Siriraj Faculty Abroad at ISOM (OM2023) in the USA
On June 21st, 2023 Prof. Kitirat Ungkanont, a Vice-Chair of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, was invited as a guest speaker to deliver a special lecture on the topic “Otitis media in children with cleft palate: comprehensive studies of the clinical course and the long-term outcome of the management.” at the “22nd International Symposium on Recent Advances in Otitis Media (OM2023)” in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.
The ISOM is the biannual International Otitis Media (OM) Symposium. The OM Symposium accomplishes the ever-difficult task of grouping leaders in OM research from all medical fields and corners of the world into one single highly interactive, exceedingly collegial scientific forum. The benefits afforded by having the ability to learn and engage in scientific exchange with OM leaders, individuals, and their research groups are immeasurable.
SiMPH2023: Unveiling Cutting-Edge Medical Insights from Japan and Thailand
On June 21st, 2023, the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, hosted the Siriraj International Conference in Medicine and Public Health 2023 (SiMPH2023) Conference, featuring a series of captivating “Share Sessions” in collaboration with Keio University, Japan. This event served as a dynamic platform for both institutions to exchange their expertise and knowledge, uniting perspectives from the medical landscapes of Thailand and Japan.
The inaugural session witnessed Prof. Yupin Suputtamongkol from Siriraj Hospital’s Department of Internal Medicine and Asst. Prof. Ho Namkoong from the Department of Infectious Diseases, School of Medicine, Keio University shared their insights on “Infectious Diseases Summit: COVID-19, Acute Undifferentiated Fever, and NTM (non-Tuberculosis Mycobacterium) from Japan & Thailand Perspectives.” Their enlightening presentations provided a comprehensive understanding of these pressing healthcare challenges, encompassing invaluable perspectives from both nations.
In the subsequent session, the audience was captivated by the insightful knowledge presented on the topic of “Pioneering the Future of Minimally Invasive Surgery for Colo-Rectal Cancer: Uniting Different Nations with a Common Goal.” Assoc. Prof. Vitoon Chinswangwatanakul, Director of Siriraj Cancer Center, and Asst. Prof. Kohei Shigeta from the Department of Surgery (General and Gastroenterological Surgery), School of Medicine, Keio University, unveiled their contributions to this field. Together, they illuminated the collaborative endeavors and shared objectives between their respective countries, propelling advancements in minimally invasive surgical techniques for the treatment of colo-rectal cancer.
The SiMPH2023 Conference, marked by this prestigious collaboration between Keio University and Siriraj Hospital, has undoubtedly ushered in a new era of medical innovation and international cooperation, fueling the exchange of transformative ideas and pushing the boundaries of healthcare excellence.
Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong Visits Siriraj
On June 19th, 2023, Prof. Apichat Asavamongkolkul, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, and Lect. Sukree Kade from the Center of Applied Thai Traditional Medicine cordially welcomed Prof. Dr. Liu Wai Ching, Prof. Dr. Au Ching Tung, and Prof. Dr. Choi Suimei from the Department of Food and Health Sciences, Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong, Hong Kong. During their visit and discussions on further collaboration between two parties at the Center of Applied Thai Traditional Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, the experts shared their knowledge and expertise in both Thai and traditional medicine.
Furthermore, Dr. Sukree also took the guests through the enlightening ‘Following the Footsteps of Royal Doctor and Thai Traditional Medicine’ exhibition organized by the Center of Applied Thai Traditional Medicine. This exhibition showcased the rich heritage and practices of Thai traditional medicine, providing a comprehensive understanding of its historical significance and contemporary applications. Dr. Sukree’s guidance enhanced the visitors’ experience, ensuring they gained valuable insights into the subject.

On June 19th, 2023, Assoc. Prof. Prapat Wanitpongpan, Deputy Dean for Corporate Communication and International Relations and Assoc. Prof. Gulapar Srisawasdi, Director of Sirindhorn School of Prosthetics and Orthotics, welcomed Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wong Man Sang, an expert in Prosthetics and Orthotics from the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, to serve as the visiting scholar at Sirindhorn School of Prosthetics and Orthotics, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, starting from June 19th-30th, 2023.
Siriraj Faculty Abroad at PNS Annual Meeting 2023 in Denmark!
During June 17th-20th, 2023, Dr. Pimchanok Kulsirichawaroj, Clinical Educator from the Division of Neurology, Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University delivered a Poster presentation on the topic “Novel Pathogenic Gene Variants in Thai Children with Inherited Peripheral Neuropathy” at “Peripheral Nerve Society (PNS) Annual Meeting 2023” in Denmark. The Study focuses on investigating gene distribution and demonstrating the genotype-phenotype correlations with a focus on pediatric-onset disease. Her contribution broadens research partnerships in the field.
The Peripheral Nerve Society is a global non-profit organization that unites scientists, physicians, and healthcare providers who are committed to studying and addressing disorders of the peripheral nervous system. Through collaborative endeavors, they actively support research, education, and the establishment of care standards in collaboration with patients and developers of treatments.

Siriraj Faculty Abroad at the ASM Microbe 2023 in USA
Asst.Prof. Wiwit Tanttibhedhyangkul, M.D., Ph.D., from the Department of Immunology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended and delivered a poster presentation on the topic “Intracellular Invasion of Orientia tsutsugamushi Induces Cathepsin- and NLRP3-Dependent Inflammasome Activation, IL-1β Release and Cell Death in Human Monocyte-Derived Macrophages” at the American Society for Microbiology annual meeting “ASM Microbe 2023” in Houston, USA, during June 16th – 19th, 2023.
