Lecturer Dollaporn Anopas, M.D., of the Division of Nematology, Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended and presented an academic poster on the topic “Unsupervised Learning for Real-Time and Continuous Gait Phase Detection” at The 45th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (IEEE EMBS 2023) between July 24th – 27th, 2023, in Sydney, Australia.

The Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC) dedicates itself to helping the biomedical engineering community achieve its goals. Since its first technical conference in 1960 in London, England, EMBC is known for convening academics, clinicians, industry, students, and researchers in the biomedical engineering and Medtech community. Assoc. Prof. Warut Pongsapich and Dr. Apipat Wiriya from the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended and presented their research presentations at “The AHNS 11th International Conference on Head & Neck Cancer” hosted by the American Head and Neck Society (AHNS) held between July 8th – 12th, 2023, in Montreal, Canada. Assoc. Prof. Pongsapich has presented his research on the topic “Comparative study of optimal compression pressure between conventional Barton’s dressing and prefabricate germent in parotidectomy patients”, and Dr. Wiriya has presented his research on the topic “Clinical Predictive Factors of Malignancy in Parotidectomy Patients.”

During June 26th-29th, 2023, Ms. Pansa Noiskul, Teaching Assistant, Vetnitat Phattana School, Medical Education Technology Center, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, delivered a poster presentation on “Supporting self-directed training of basic transthoracic echocardiography knowledge with 3D augmented reality for resident doctorsat The Australian & New Zealand Association for Health Professional Educators (ANZAHPE) conference 2023 in Australia. This experience provided the opportunity to strengthen network connections and partner up with other professionals related to immersive technology (AR, VR, and MR) for medical education.

ANZAHPE conferences are ideal for health professional educators in the Asia-Pacific region. They provide intellectual stimulation and social engagement and support educational research with grants, awards, conference presentations, and peer-reviewed articles in their journal.

Assoc. Prof. Tanyaluck Thientunyakit from the Department of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, was invited as a guest moderator and lecturer at the international conference “Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging 2023 Annual Meeting” in Chicago, Illinois, USA, between June 24th – 27th, 2023. In this meeting, Assoc. Prof. Thientunyakit has delivered a research presentation on the topic “Imaging Investigation of Regional Metabolic Activity, Cerebral Small Vessel Disease, and Amyloid Pathology in Early Alzheimer’s Disease: Synergistic Pathophysiology” (which has been awarded “International Best Abstract Award”); delivered a lecture on the topic “Reading with Experts”; and also moderated on a “Neurosciences Integrated Session: AI/Machine Learning and Quantification”.

The SNMMI 2023 Annual Meeting is recognized as the premier educational, scientific, research, and networking event in nuclear medicine and molecular imaging. The four-day event, taking place each June, provides physicians, technologists, pharmacists, laboratory professionals, and scientists with an in-depth view of the latest research and development in the field as well as providing insights into practical applications for the clinic.

On June 23rd, 2023, Prof. Thawatchai Akaraviputh, Director of Siriraj Medical School; Assoc. Prof. Vitoon Chinswangwatanakul, Director of Siriraj Cancer Center; Lecturer Rangsima Timmanee, Department of Internal Medicine; and Assoc. Prof. Dr.Chantacha Sitticharoon, Department of Physiology welcomed distinguished guests: Prof. Lau Tang Ching, Vice-Dean of Education from the National University of Singapore, Prof. Masanaga Yamawaki from Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Prof. Keiichi Akita, Director of School of Medicine on visit and discussion at Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University.
 
Moreover, Prof. Lau, Prof. Yamawaki, and Prof. Nijasri Channarong from Chulalongkorn University’s Department of Internal Medicine shared their expertise in the discussion on the theme “Future Trends in Medical Curriculum: How to Prepare Medical Students to Serve the World?” in SICMPH 2023 conference hosted by Siriraj at Room 202, Srisavarinthira Building.
 
This collaborative event allowed for exchanging knowledge and insights, benefiting all attendees. The esteemed guests shared their expertise, providing valuable insights into innovative approaches to medical education and addressing the evolving needs of global medical students.
 
They also visited and discussed further collaboration in Medical Education at Siriraj Medical Simulation Center for Education and Training (SiMSET), and Siriraj Training and Education Center for Clinical Skills (SiTEC).

Siriraj Faculty Abroad at ISOM (OM2023) in the USA

On June 21st, 2023 Prof. Kitirat Ungkanont, a Vice-Chair of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, was invited as a guest speaker to deliver a special lecture on the topic “Otitis media in children with cleft palate: comprehensive studies of the clinical course and the long-term outcome of the management.” at the “22nd International Symposium on Recent Advances in Otitis Media (OM2023)” in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.

The ISOM is the biannual International Otitis Media (OM) Symposium. The OM Symposium accomplishes the ever-difficult task of grouping leaders in OM research from all medical fields and corners of the world into one single highly interactive, exceedingly collegial scientific forum. The benefits afforded by having the ability to learn and engage in scientific exchange with OM leaders, individuals, and their research groups are immeasurable.

SiMPH2023: Unveiling Cutting-Edge Medical Insights from Japan and Thailand

On June 21st, 2023, the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, hosted the Siriraj International Conference in Medicine and Public Health 2023 (SiMPH2023) Conference, featuring a series of captivating “Share Sessions” in collaboration with Keio University, Japan. This event served as a dynamic platform for both institutions to exchange their expertise and knowledge, uniting perspectives from the medical landscapes of Thailand and Japan.

The inaugural session witnessed Prof. Yupin Suputtamongkol from Siriraj Hospital’s Department of Internal Medicine and Asst. Prof. Ho Namkoong from the Department of Infectious Diseases, School of Medicine, Keio University shared their insights on “Infectious Diseases Summit: COVID-19, Acute Undifferentiated Fever, and NTM (non-Tuberculosis Mycobacterium) from Japan & Thailand Perspectives.” Their enlightening presentations provided a comprehensive understanding of these pressing healthcare challenges, encompassing invaluable perspectives from both nations.

     

In the subsequent session, the audience was captivated by the insightful knowledge presented on the topic of “Pioneering the Future of Minimally Invasive Surgery for Colo-Rectal Cancer: Uniting Different Nations with a Common Goal.” Assoc. Prof. Vitoon Chinswangwatanakul, Director of Siriraj Cancer Center, and Asst. Prof. Kohei Shigeta from the Department of Surgery (General and Gastroenterological Surgery), School of Medicine, Keio University, unveiled their contributions to this field. Together, they illuminated the collaborative endeavors and shared objectives between their respective countries, propelling advancements in minimally invasive surgical techniques for the treatment of colo-rectal cancer.

The SiMPH2023 Conference, marked by this prestigious collaboration between Keio University and Siriraj Hospital, has undoubtedly ushered in a new era of medical innovation and international cooperation, fueling the exchange of transformative ideas and pushing the boundaries of healthcare excellence.

 

Siriraj Faculty Abroad at PNS Annual Meeting 2023 in Denmark!

During June 17th-20th, 2023, Dr. Pimchanok Kulsirichawaroj, Clinical Educator from the Division of Neurology, Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University delivered a Poster presentation on the topic “Novel Pathogenic Gene Variants in Thai Children with Inherited Peripheral Neuropathy” at “Peripheral Nerve Society (PNS) Annual Meeting 2023” in Denmark. The Study focuses on investigating gene distribution and demonstrating the genotype-phenotype correlations with a focus on pediatric-onset disease. Her contribution broadens research partnerships in the field.

The Peripheral Nerve Society is a global non-profit organization that unites scientists, physicians, and healthcare providers who are committed to studying and addressing disorders of the peripheral nervous system. Through collaborative endeavors, they actively support research, education, and the establishment of care standards in collaboration with patients and developers of treatments.

Asst.Prof. Wiwit Tanttibhedhyangkul, M.D., Ph.D., from the Department of Immunology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended and delivered a poster presentation on the topic “Intracellular Invasion of Orientia tsutsugamushi Induces Cathepsin- and NLRP3-Dependent Inflammasome Activation, IL-1β Release and Cell Death in Human Monocyte-Derived Macrophages” at the American Society for Microbiology annual meeting “ASM Microbe 2023” in Houston, USA, during June 16th – 19th, 2023.

Between June 15th – 17th, 2023, Assoc. Prof. Siwanon Jirawatnotai, M.D., Ph.D., of the Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, was invited as a guest speaker to deliver an original research presentation on the topic “Targeting G1 Cell Cycle Machinery in Biliary Tract Cancer” at the “Cell Cycle in Development and Cancer Conference” held by the Faculty of Biology, Institute of Developmental Biology and Biomedical, University of Warsaw, Poland. This “outstanding” original research by Assoc. Prof. Jirawatnotai will be recognized by leading researchers in the field of “cell cycle and cancer” worldwide including the leading scientists, editors, and reviewers in many leading medical journals around the globe!

The Cell Cycle in Development and Cancer Conference gathers outstanding specialists from around the world who studied the development of mammals and the mechanisms of carcinogenesis.
